Roros Tweed

Norwegian wool, 100% Norwegian production and close collaboration with Scandinavia's leading designers and textile artists have made blankets from Røros Tweed one of the most prestigious all-Norwegian quality products.

Røros Tweed is located 600 meters above sea level in Røros, Norway. An unlikely location for a textile factory, many people might think – but it has its history.

Peder Hiort, who was director of Røros Copper Works in the 18th century, bequeathed his entire fortune to the poor in Røros. Hiort's will has been characterized as one of the wisest donations in the Nordic region. It says, among other things, "... that Labour is thereby being subjected to, and those who agitate there that the new nod shall same with the Work fortiene..."

According to the will, wool and linen should be purchased for distribution among the poor. Of this, they would spin, knit and weave for the production of stockings, wading and warm clothes – textiles that were necessary in the cold mountain climate at Røros. The products were collected, and salaries paid for the work. Every year at the Age of Sainthood, these textile products, along with other gifts, were handed out to those in need. Many who were initially paid for the work, got the products back as gifts.

The founding of Røros-Tweed was a continuation of the Hiorts Foundation's house work. It began with tissue courses in 1938–39. Textiles were woven in private homes such as the Hiorts Foundation had run it for 150 years, and a sales centre was created. It was invested in machinery, and eventually the business moved to more factory production. The need for larger premises was reported, and a new factory was completed in 1952.

Over the years Røros-Tweed has experimented with Norwegian wool and the development of high quality textile products and design. The factory has for many years collaborated with leading Norwegian textile artists. Røros-Tweed is known for its curtains, furniture fabrics, throws and tweeds.

Today Røros-Tweed has reorganized its production to meet the challenges of the modern textile industry. The factory's production is now concentrated on high-quality blankets in 100% pure new wool with design inspired by the aesthetic and cultural heritage of Røros – and the fascinating mountain scenery.
